In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
